Operation Wounded Soldiers was a program I started back in Dec. of 2001. Our main goal was to help not only wounded soldiers and their families, but also help soldiers who were deployed by matching them with people who wanted to "adopt" them for the term of their deployment. That meant that I of course would adopt soldiers to take care of, as did my sister Reen & Liz.
I'd been working pretty hard so when memorial Day weekend rolled around in 2003, the 3 of us decide to head for Cherokee North Carolina for a ROAD TRIP!!!!
Not wanting to worry our soldiers, we emailed them the week before letting them know we'd "be out of pocket" for the 3 day weekend. My soldier named Matthew said "Man we really wish we could go on vaction too! You all stay safe and drink a beer for us!" That got me to thinking...hmmmm... why COULDN'T the guys go on vactaion with us??? They had sent me a picture of our three adopted soldiers together... so the day came, I grabbed the picture and my camera... and this is what happened..... (PAGE 1)
We left town Saturday May 29th
at about 11:00 am... we had not had time for breakfast, so as
soon as we got to the Ocoee river,
we looked for a restaurant.
Of course we brought the guys in to keep an eye on us....
Our waitress saw me taking this picture and looked at us real funny, so Reen told her "We told our soldiers we'd take them on vacation
with us, so she's taking a picture to show them. " The waitress thought that was really cool and we practically had to beat her with a stick to keep her from drooling all over you guys...
WORK WITH ME PEOPLE... WORK WITH ME!
I thought it best to keep my eye on you guys...When we left, the waitress told us to tell our
"husbands" thanks for all you are doing for us and Happy Memorial Day"...
So consider yourselves told! ;^)
From then on, you poor guys were shackled to us... =^)
Outside the restaurant was this very interesting shack and van
Of course we couldn't resist showing off our "husbands"!
Liz... WHAT is that between your fingers???? I'M not going there.... (Heh heh heh)
Crazy dude just CRAZY!!!
Soon we came upon the mighty Ocoee River...
where rafters abound!
I SAID... where rafters abound....
We stopped at the Centennial Bridge where the Olympics were held in 1996. They are reputed to have some of the best white water rafting in the world.
We were going to go swimming here, but it turned out to be too rough and they wouldn't allow swimmers that day.Doesn't look that rough to me.....but what do I know?
(Besides, we couldn't find your swim trunks anywhere...)
I'd let you all go swimming, but I'm afraid you'd drowned with all that gear on! =^O
Still with me guys?
Meanwhile... back at the gift shop....
LOOK!!! Reenie has BANGS!
Sending you guys a great big bear hug!
Here we are, celebrating Memorial Day Weekend in your honor guys!I'm so happy I could just spit!
Even you guys are in the "Spirit".
Now we are headed into town for the evening. "Cause chics are KEWL!
yeah... Chics RULE!!!"
At Harrah's casino... you guys brought us LUCK!
Thank you guys! *Smooch!
The casino... it's now approx. 2 am and we missed dinner... we are HUNGRY! We are going in search of....FOOD!!!
It's a long story... but basically,
we left the casino...
took the bus to our car...
drove all over the freaking town...
drove all the way back to our motel, JUST to turn around and go back to the casino to get some grub! By this time, we were laughing so much everyone
thought we were drunk!
But the truth is, we never had a drop of liquor the entire vacation, but the situation was so funny,
and we were so tired, it just looked like we were drunk! Turns out, the ONLY place you can get a meal
after 11:00pm in that town IS at the casino, where we had just been!
Soooo.... we drove BACK to the casino, took the bus AGAIN and finally found FOOD!
Dig in guys...I know you must be hungry too... it's 3:00 am and we finally found some GRUB!
After that we made our way back to our motel and finally got to sleep about 4:00am.
The next morning, about 10:00am, we hit the pancake house before heading up to the Smokies!
We simply wanted to do something nice for our soldiers since they were deployed in Iraq and knew they couldn't take the day off as we did... and they seemed to enjoy it immensley! When we got back home I made up these two web pages and captions, published it to the web and sent them each the URL in their email...
Much to our surprise THEY LOVED IT!!! They sent the link to EVERYONE in their platoon, and soon, they were sending it to everyone and so on and so on! Soon it went VIRAL!
Be sure to see the all the fun in these soldiers adventures, as we do our best to show them a fun time!
