Moody Brick is a beautiful two story plantation house built before 1855 according to the vertical file at the Scottsboro library. There were serveral slaves, as they had 2500 acres of land to farm. The house itself was built by hand and every brick was hand made by the slaves. This house was also a field hospital for soldiers who fought in the civil war, and the injured were sent by train out of Chattanooga to the house to conveless.
There are at least 3 cemeteries on this property, one belonging to the original family members, but slaves were not buried within that cemetery. It was common knowledge that the overseer was brutal and mean to the slaves. Union soldiers who died at the house were buried outside of the cemeteries, as they were the enemy. Soldiers who needed operations and lost limbs, had those limbs buried all over the yard and what is now the driveway.
The house has been rumored to be haunted for many, many years.
I have been out to Moody Brick on many occasions, I was even given a tour through the grand ole house and it is absolutely beautiful and full of history. I was given permission to take photos by the owners mother who would check on the property while repairs were being made. I did not lie, I am a huge history buff and LOVE old architecture. I simply did not mention I am also a paranormal investigator as I wanted to see the beauty of this home inside and out. There is even a drawing on the ceiling above the staircase that they did not allow anyone to paint over, thank God. I will post it at the end of this page so you all can see it. This house saw many wounded soldiers... did one of them paint this symbol of freedom as he came up the stairs from the basement? We will never know for sure.
These photos below were taken in 2003, 2004 and 2009. What I see here in these photos is just too compelling to be ignored. The photos here, I believe, speak for themselves.
NOTE * There ARE people living in Moody Brick now. There are electrical fences, livestock and wrought iron fence and gate. There is also a yard dog gaurding the place. *
NEVER, EVER TRESSPASS - THE OWNERS DO NOT LIKE GHOST HUNTERS
Below is the same photo, only turned into a negative, it gives more detail to the entity...
Negative of the entity on the second floor, note the details... he appears to be wearing a hat, and has on a shirt, tie and possibly a vest?
There is a room off the back of the house directly above the old kitchen in the basement that is like a sun room. There are 3 large windows out the back of the room, two large windows on each side, and 2 glass doors. If you are standing out in the side yard it is easy to see clean through that room out to the other side yard. This room in particular I have caught a lot of activity in. Just about everytime I would take a picture from either side yard, the room looked so dark you could not see out the windows to the other side. I could see through it perfectly with my own eyes, however on many occasions, my camera could not. I was very puzzled as to why it would be like that, until one day, I was taking a picture of the inside of the room when I got my answer. A dark mist is forming in that room as I took the photo. I have no doubt had I waited a couple seconds longer, my camera could not have seen through the darkness. I caught this dark mist forming in mid-air!
In my opinion, this photo is one of the best pieces of evidence I have ever caught. When I first looked at the picture I dismissed it, but something made me take a closer look. In the lower right hand corner of the photo appears to be some spilled white paint that one of the workers spilled and then carelessly walked through... only, the other three photos I took right after, none of them showed this "foot print". Curious, I blew up the photo for a better look and to my amazement, I saw it was no foot print at all... this thing was MOVING!
Look at the close up and you will see it is actually tracking OVER ITSELF! Absolutely amazing!
The sun room in the back... there was nothing directly in this window when I took this picture
close up of strange spirit in the window
It semed like anytime I took a picture of this room, on the inside or out, something odd would show up in the window that simply was not there to my naked eye
Meet my dad, we were out at the old shed (which has since been torn down)
Close up of entity on my dad
Meet my dad, we were out at the old shed (which has since been torn down.) The owners mother was giving us a tour of the place when I snapped this picture of my dad peering inside. I never expected to see some gargoyle like entity up against my dads stomach!
A man in a brown suit appears to be coming out of the untended fields towards Moody Brick
Close up of a man coming out of the fields
This photo was taken the same day the owners mother showed us through the house and grounds, I assure you, there were no real people walking through the fields on a 98 degree day in a brown suit no less...
Something appears yet again in the window located in the sun room
Close up of ugly anominally in the sun room window
As I said before, this sun room is very active, and it never disappoints. I think Moody Brick will always be, one of my favorite haunts.
I was very surprised to see this spirit peeking around the corner at me
Close up of man peeking around the corner of the house, Moody Brick
all three sets of pictures above are from the exact same photo
These pictures were taken at night at Moody Brick. No one was there, and no lights were on in the house. We only went there to take pictures of the outside of the house to see what we could get. Not expecting much, I took photos all around the parimeter of the house and left. I downloaded this photo. It is of the second story window , to the right, (if standing in front of the house, next to the second floor balcony. The entity highest up in the photo, is actually on the overhang of the roof... the other one in the window pain.
Back to the sunoom in back... look closely at the close up next the this one, and you will see a huge head in the door, and a smaller head in the "haunted" window
What an awesome spirit display to a house who has witnessed so much history.
This photo is very typical of the lively activity within Moody Brick...
Close up of the brick column... everything is uniform... now take a look at the photo below, taken approx. 3 seconds after this one...
Close up of distorted bricks, compared with the one above taken 3 seconds before this one
The bricks closest to the girl in the photo are now very distorted... how can they do that in a span of 3 seconds and I never saw anything out of the ordinary at all???
Taking a picture of the parlor room from the outside, this is what came out... original photo, look to the photo at the right for explanation...
Eye to eye with something at the parlor window
Taken in 2003 I still have no explanation for this cartoon like spirit in the window
As promised, here is the patriotic painting that greets anyone who has a need to go down stairs. I really applaud the owners for understanding just how significant it is in light of the house being used as a field hospital during the Civil War. They all fought and died for a cause they believed in, which is more than most people do these days.
As far as the question "Is Moody Brick haunted", I've laid the evidence before you, you decide.
